Sustaining Innovation:
Lead the Way
When it comes to sustaining innovation, leadership makes all the difference. We’ve seen it again and again - when a leader not only supports innovation but shows up for it, everything changes.
Some of the most successful Innovation Engineering groups we’ve coached had a leader who rolled up their sleeves right alongside their teams. Sometimes that meant attending training for a second or third time. Other times it meant giving visible permission to experiment, learn, and even fail. In every case, participation from leadership turned “one more program” into a movement.

Here are a few ways to lead the way:
- Be visible. Show your team that innovation isn’t a side project - it’s part of how you lead. Attend sessions, ask questions, and model curiosity.
- Be supportive. Encourage people to apply what they’ve learned, even when it means breaking old routines. Protect time for experimentation.
- Be contagious. Enthusiasm spreads fast. When others see your commitment, they’ll follow your lead - and the culture shifts faster than you think.
The simple truth is this: innovation culture flows from the top. When leaders make it a priority, people feel permission to think bigger, test ideas faster, and take smart risks that move the organization forward.
